Daddy's Boy
Ethan LOVES Mike! There are many times every day when he wants nothing to do with me if Mike is around. He gets very excited when I mention "daddy" and says "dada" very excitedly. Mike is the chorister at church, so Ethan likes to watch him and laugh at him across the chapel. This Sunday we got to church late (and missed me being sustained as the 1st counselor in the ward primary presidency) so Mike didn't lead the music. As soon as the organ started, however, Ethan started waving his arms in big conducting motions! Tonight as we sang an opening song for family home evening, he did the same thing! I'm glad he is watching and learning from Mike already! Ethan also folds his arms on his own and actually kept them folded for an entire prayer today! He is learning so fast right now that I am really trying to step it up with teaching him the important things in life like reading, scriptures, prayers, church, safety, etc.

Santa
Our ward had a great Santa set up this year. I didn't really think in advance about cute outfits (just warm ones because the party was outside), so it's a good thing Ethan looks cute in anything. When it was Ethan's turn I let him walk up to Santa by himself (hoping to avoid a freak-0ut). While on Santa's lap, he just stared at Santa with wide eyes. Fortunately, the camera man had sleigh bells that would get Ethan to look at the camera momentarily. No smiles from our tired boy though.
With the Right Motivation
Almost two weeks ago Mike got home from work at the same time his violin student arrived. Ethan was SO excited to see him walk in the door, but Mike had to go straight into the study for his lesson. Ethan stood in the entryway yelling, "daDA, daDA!". Once he heard the violins start he wanted to go be a part of the lesson (he loves watching Mike play the violin). The problem was he kept standing at Mike's feet babbling and pulling on Mike's pants. I tried to hold him outside the door where he could watch, but he would have none of it. So, I took Ethan back to my bedroom to hang out while I packed for our cruise (more details to come). While I was in the closet I heard a door banging. Then I heard Ethan yelling "dada" again and I could hear the violins much more clearly. I walked out to find that Ethan had, for the first time, opened a door on his own! Getting to see his dad and watch a violin lesson was motivation enough to finally figure out the door. Now the real fun of keeping him out of restricted areas begins!

Rainy Day
On Monday Phoenix got a HUGE storm! It rained all day and had crazy wind all night! I kept jumping up thinking a tree had fallen over or that something had crashed into the house. The wind was literally making the house shake! I haven't checked our roof tiles, but it looks like we were fortunate and only lost a few stalks of corn (and our full garbage can ended up down the street).
In the morning, Ethan was busy taking a 4 hour nap, and I was afraid he would miss the rain, so as soon as he woke up I put a sweatshirt and shoes on him (with his pjs) and took him out to play. He loved it!
At first he stayed by the front door and either played with the rain gutters (quite a novelty on an Arizona house actually) or pointed all over saying "da...da...da."
Then I took him out to the gutter so he could splash in a "puddle."
I love rain!
I got him to splash his feet a few times, but not on camera of course. For the sake of not boring you with Ethan's entire encounter with rain, here is a little clip. (All of the rain pictures and videos are from my phone-sorry for the poor quality!)

Sam moved! :( Ethan is much lonelier during the day--I'm just not as much fun as Sam was. We hope he is enjoying Illinois!
Ethan has turned into a blanket baby and carries his blanket all over, and in very creative ways.
It is cool enough for us to spend a lot of time outside now! We actually have to wear long sleeves and pants pretty much all the time! Ethan is enjoying getting to go outside where he can eat rocks, play in his sandbox, and run all over the yard.
Last Saturday was our ward Christmas party (Santa pictures to come). After that we went over to a community Winter Festival. They dumped a bunch of snow in a parking lot and even created a place for kids to sled!
Ethan was pretty tired, and apparently unimpressed by the snow. I don't know how he squats like this for so long, but he just sat there in this position until we picked him up.
The only time he would smile is when I would kick my toe into the snow sending it flying into his face.
He did like the glowing necklace they gave him.
And the big inflatable slide Mike somehow got him up on. (There were lots of inflatable play places, carnival food and games, a concert, etc. and it was free! I hope they make this festival a tradition!)
I love this picture! If Mike ever looks at the blog, he'll be annoyed I posted it--good thing he doesn't read this.
Ethan likes this new top from Grandma Abegg. For some reason one night, every time he pushed the handle down, he would put his hands up in the air while the top spun.

I walked over and found him inside this box. It was on its side because Kiwi had knocked it over to sleep in--silly boys!

So, we went Tuesday instead, but by the time Mike was able to get there after work, it was already dark. Not bad for a night picture that we took with the help of a tripod and self-timer!
Ethan is almost 14 months old and we still swaddle him before he goes to sleep--biggest baby burrito ever. Now when he is tired, he will sometimes go lay down on his blanket like he is saying, "I'm ready; swaddle me!" I usually swaddle him on the couch so when he saw the blanket spread out, he walked right over and leaned against it.
We still go to the Children's Museum weekly. Last week Ethan got to paint for the first time. He is very good at dipping the brush, but mostly wanted to shake it, so we didn't paint for too long. Just long enough for him to cover his leg and get a few big globs on his head.
Other happenings:
I never blogged about my birthday, but I had a great one-25! Mike took me out to dinner and shopping! I got birthday money from a few family members and it was so fun to get to splurge on something for myself! On my actual birthday, which was a Sunday, Mike watched Ethan and I spent hours sitting in bed reading a good book. I miss being able to do that!
I am on the board of directors for my HOA, and we just put our management company out to bid. I have collected, and am working on reviewing, about 20 proposals. That took awhile. I also planned/organized a community garage sale.
We have spent just about every Saturday in a football haze. BYU beat Utah--a great way to end the season! I will miss watching all the games, but it will be good for us to start being productive on Saturdays again!
We've also been very slowly getting Christmas decorations up. I insist on getting a live Christmas tree every year. I actually decorated it by myself this year, and it only took me 5 days! :) This is kind of a goofy looking tree, but I really like it because it was grown less than 2 miles from my home at a local nursery. I like supporting local businesses and I think it has extra character being grown here in the desert. Plus, it was only $10!
I am still working an office job from home, so that is keeping me busy as I try to finish up a project by this week. I am also conducting trainings internally and externally for a new company website. Last week I went to Tucson for a day, but most of the trainings are/will be in Phoenix.
We are keeping busy, but having fun!

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
I love this time of year because of all the fun events that allow me to see my friends and family. Unfortunately, all of these fun events, paired with a busy work schedule, have resulted in me getting behind in my blogging. So, I need to do a little bit of catch up before I get anymore behind.
This year we were able to go to Detroit again for Thanksgiving to visit my dad and step mom. We love going out there every year and spending a long weekend with family.
I'm a slacker and didn't get my camera out once, so these are all from Lisa's blog. (Do you have any pictures Joe and Lauren?)
We went bowling one afternoon, and Ethan got a strike! He really liked getting to "carry" the ball and push it down the ramp. At one point he was squatting trying to lift a ball off the ground; it was hilarious.

Ethan finally learned to go down stairs. We don't have them here, so he doesn't get much practice. Now he can climb backwards down them, or lay on his stomach and push himself down (much funnier to watch). When we got home he began applying his new skill to things like going from our back patio to the gravel in the yard. There is no drop, but he will turn around and step "down" to the new surface.
Ethan loved walking behind the barstools and pulling them in front of him. He also spent a lot of time putting on tons and tons of beads! Grandma Dianne had a big bag of them and Ethan was in heaven!
While we were there we had a baby shower for my sister-in-law Lauren. She is expecting a baby in February. Lisa came up with the great idea of doing freezer paper stencils, and check out the awesome snacks Dianne provided! Now those are cupcakes!
We spent Saturday afternoon at the Ford Museum. Ethan had a great time and even developed a new style of dance. The video is on Mike's phone, so I don't have it now, but Ethan walked right over to a green screen set up for visitors to dance in MTV music videos and started bouncing in a squat position. I'm not sure how he knew what to do, but that was one entertaining music video (actually, he was too short to show up on camera).
In the Lego area, Ethan go to dress up like a knight, play with big Legos, and play on lots of fun play equipment.
More beads. He put these on by himself!
Killing time at the Detroit airport. Mike found this chair (on wheels) and was pushing Ethan around the baggage claim area. We learned here that Ethan is not afraid of the escalator and will walk right on to it...
