Halloween!

For the Ward party, the whole family dressed up like pirates!  Benton and Mike's costumes were super last minute, search the house for components, kind of costumes.  Mike got his together by himself while I was at a baptism, and I was really happy that he played along and got so creative.  Family picture to come but, Mike is standing in the background of this picture.
I think Benton may just be the cutest pirate ever, in my unbiased opinion.
Jake (from Jake and the Neverland Pirates).  When we first started talking about Halloween, Ethan said he wanted to be Thomas.  I really thought it was going to be the 3rd year in a row of Thomas, but he changed his mind to a firefighter.  We found an awesome firefighter costume at Costco, but he spotted this Jake costume on the same rack.  We ended up getting both and he was going to be the firefighter in NY since the costume would be warmer.  Instead, he was Jake twice, but the firefighter costume was a great deal so it will go in a dress up box.

Anytime Ethan was asked what he was going to be he would say, "A firefighter. I was going to be Thomas but I changed my mind, and now I'm going to be Jake."  Kind of like if you ask him how old he is he pretty much always answers, "I was three for a couple days and now I am four."

Adam and Ethan-both pirates, how exciting!  I need to have these two stand by each other and see if Adam has really gotten that tall or if this picture is deceptive.
For Halloween day, the boys and I were in Rochester with Lisa.  Benton was a garden gnome.

He wasn't a huge fan of the beard.

Lisa and Dan threw a Halloween carnival for their community (they are on a committee that does this stuff).  Ethan played one game, a cake walk (the prizes weren't cake).  He came in and told me, "Mom, I played a game where you walk in a circle and you stop when the music stops and Lisa didn't pick my name and then the music came back on and we walked and that time she picked me!  I got to pick a..." I don't remember the choices he told me, but he got a candy.  After that, he just drove a train around until pinata time.
I could not believe that he stayed in line the whole time for the pinata!  It must have been super exciting to him.  When it burst, he couldn't get through the crowd to the candy, but Lisa scattered some around the edges.  I think he got a piece.  :)   At one point the rope got stuck on the basketball hoop and Dan jumped up, grabbed the rim, and pulled himself up.  Hanging on with one hand while using the other to free the rope wasn't working, so he pulled his legs up, wrapped them around the poles holding the backboard, and used his hands to free the rope.  Very impressive!
More of my cute gnome (holding his favorite stuffed animal).

Enjoying the aftermath!  Ethan got cold enough and tired enough (particularly the hand holding the bucket) that he asked to stop trick or treating and go home before the other kids were done.

At one door the lady handing out candy ran out before getting to Ethan.  He was SO sad!!! He started tearing up and being very pathetic.  We pointed out that he'd still get a lot more candy, but he insisted that he wanted candy from that house. The lady felt awful. About 2 doors down, with Ethan still sulking, the lady came out with a granola bar and gave it to him because she didn't want to see him cry. He was very happy and was happy to give her a hug when she asked. Poor lady! Ethan has a way of getting what he wants. Not that he's eaten the granola bar yet.
It would be SO fun if trick or treating with cousins didn't require a cross country trip and being away from Dad.

Pinkalicious and her cupcake.

Inspector gadget!  There was a motor that made the blade on his hat spin.

Can't get a more classic trick or treating picture than this one!
This is a fun age for Halloween, because they are totally fine with sharing their candy!  Fun, but unhealthy for me.

Daily Life: October

In October...

I made a rule that we can only have train tracks in the family room every other day so that our house doesn't ALWAYS look like this.  And Ethan filled the memory card on our camera.  Some shots (like the next two) were worth keeping.

Mike's sister Kris sent us this giraffe costume.  It is still a little big, but so cute!  And Benton thought it was hilarious.

 Laughing.

Ethan got socker boppers and a train track set from us for his birthday.
It was "cool" enough to get Friday park days going again.
Benton learned to climb up the playground stairs, turn around, and slide down the stairs. (And obviously face planted at some point getting sand stuck to all the moist parts of his face).
We started using the backyard again!
Benton started trying to play with the iPad.
Of course there was lots of time in the high chair.
 Peek a boo!

I did a few of the Halloween activities I planned for Ethan, like Don't Eat Pete.
 And playdough monsters.

Ethan sat still doing activities from his Thomas magazine for longer than he ever sits.
 Brothers were silly.

We made it to Pump It Up.
 Which wore the boys out.
 More backyard time!
We went to a baptism and accessorized Benton with Rachel's headband and necklace.

We spent the boys' birthday money.
I organized and put on a Blockwatch picnic for our neighborhood (Benton enjoyed the baked beans and bubble machine).
Ethan got a trampoline from Grandpa that he, Benton, and our friends have been enjoying.
Benton got this awesome activity cube from Grandpa.
 We played with trains.
And took pictures and videos of them.
We went swimming and laid on the deck to warm up/dry off since Mom forgot the towels.

 The boys got haircuts.
 Another park day!

We spent our small amount of unscheduled weekend time going on a family bike ride before I left.  These helmets didn't last long.  Especially since after this picture Mike had to goop some tires to repair holes.  Notice Benton's hand resting on Ethan's.

We rode several miles to a park and Benton laid on Ethan's shoulder for the trip.
We played and had a picnic.
The rest of the month was filled with Halloween and the boys and I leaving for NY, but I'll include those pictures in separate posts.
